  4.     Our story on the Seattle backlash against the migration of
  5. Californians to that city (NATION, Nov. 13) stirred a number of
  6. Westerners to speak out. Some benevolent Washingtonians wrote that
  7. they were embarrassed by reports of discrimination against
  8. Californians, whom they personally welcomed. A member of the
  9. keep-out crowd who described herself as "a permanently rusty
  10. Seattlite" makes her point by downgrading Seattle's attractions to
  11. people from other states -- "including friends." A California
  12. chauvinist snaps, "The worst of California is still better than the
  13. best of Seattle." Readers in the buffer state of Oregon are
  14. sensibly keeping it a rhetoric-free zone.
